History

This is a 29 year old man with a several month history of weight loss and diarrhea. The biopsy is from the duodenum.

Microscopic Findings

   

Sections show a relatively preserved crypt-to-villous ratio, with no evidence of atrophy.

The lamina propria shows an increase in cellularity, populated by a mononuclear cell infiltrate of lymphocytes and plasma cells.

No significant architectural distortion of the glands or crypts are noted.

    Many of the villi contain an increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes, extending through the full length of the villi and numbering over 1 lymphocyte per 3-4 enterocytes.
